What is priming a coil? And when and why should you do it?

Anybody getting into vaping may have heard the phrase "have you primed your coil?" or "you should prime your coil" at some point.

If you are confused to what priming a coil means, keep reading and I will explain what priming is and when it should be done.

The simple way to explain what "priming a coil" is, is the act of getting a coil ready to use with minimal chance of the coil dry-firing and starting to burn. It is simple to prime a coil and there are a few ways to do this.

The first, easiest and most common way is to place your new coil into your tank or pod and fill it up with the e-liquid of your choosing. Then you let the coil "stand" for about 5 to 10 minutes, this means leaving your e-cig on the side or in your bag and not using it for those 5 to 10 minutes.

The next way to prime your coil is to pre-soak your new coil with e-liquid before piecing your tank or pod back together. All you have to do for this technique is to put small amounts of e-Liquid on the visible cotton components of your new coil. The downside to this technique is that you could add too much e-liquid to the fresh coil causing it to leak or for you to waste e-liquid. You also might not completely soak all of the cotton components in the coil leading to dry-firing.

You can use whichever of these techniques you wish, depending on which is more comfortable or convenient for you. A mixture of these two techniques works well and requires you to only wait about 5 minutes for your coil to be primed.

When should you prime your coil? The correct answer is only when installing a brand new coil into your tank or pod. You only need to prime your new coil once for its lifetime.
